I Do...Not Eat Gluten: How to Survive Weddings When Gluten Free

Image
Hello Internet! As someone who has attended a grand total of 13 weddings, specifically 7 weddings (including my own) as a typical gluten-eating person and 6 weddings while avoiding gluten at all costs, I can safely come to the conclusion that weddings are always fun. Period. Being a gluten free wedding guest should not put a damper on organizing or celebrating a special day. There are ways to avoid that scary “Will I be able to safely eat anything here?!” feeling and still be able to jam out to Uptown Funk, as one absolutely and always should. I will preface this entire post by sharing that many of my incredibly thoughtful friends who got married after I realized I had a food allergy, told their catering companies ahead of time about their extra special guest’s dietary needs. (I know! So, SO sweet!) However, you don’t need to have super cool friends to safely eat at a wedding. My friends Liz and Phil had a beautiful wedding and a unique menu. The waitress informed me that ...

Finding Time For YOU In A Time For THEM

Image
Hello Internet! It's been a while since I've logged into wonderful  Blogger.com  and taken a seat to write and publish a blog post instead of drafting ideas on the fly using the Notes app on my iPhone. I've had quite an adventure during the first half of 2018, a numerous blog posts type of adventure, so stay tuned! But, first things first, part of the reason as to why I haven't posted is because SO. Much. Was. Happening. I was actually unsure as to what topic I should use to start blogging again. Yes, I know, this is an obviously lazy excuse because I could have honestly started anywhere about anything, but life got in the way and now here we are, in July. I want to first share with my readers some success within the chaos that was my January - June 2018. 2018 has been an exciting year for my friends and family, and thankfully, it's been filled with mostly wonderful events! This means that I attended fun occasions such as weddings, showers, BBQs, holiday pa...

Indulgence or Self Care?

Image
Happy 2018, Internet! I hope everyone had a wonderful end of 2017 as well! Long time, no blog post, for reasons I’ll explain, but I hope everyone out there in the interwebs is safe, happy and healthy! This past December, CatAllergicHusband and I added a new addition to our family with our hypoallergenic Russian Blue kitten named Ghost. Since I get a kick out of telling people about her nomenclature, please indulge me with this short list: 1. She's named after the direwolf in Game of Thrones . 2. Like her namesake, she was the runt of her litter and immediately loyal to us. 3. Her middle name is Pepper, making her Ghost Pepper, which fits since she can be a fiery little thing. 4. We get great enjoyment out of calling "Ghooooooost!" around the condo, which probably freaks out our neighbors. Our little Ghost Pepper with her little Ghost Pepper. (She's way bigger than this now!) Ghost is super affectionate, playful and freaking adorable. She is as obsessed ...

Naps, Vitamins and Supplements, Oh My!

Image
Honestly, this post could have a million different titles. Here are a few other options: "Why my purse sounds like a medicine cabinet"  "Why my friends come to me for health advice" "Why I'm called the Nap Queen" As my best friend pointed out, this entire post could easily be the story of my life. I've been trying out supplements for what seems like forever to try and find the exact right mix to bring me back to feeling like me again. Balance isn't only an essential part of who I am as a Libra, (yes, I love reading about my sign) but I physically need it as a human being. (We all do, but I like to think that I especially do.)  My body goes out of whack on the regular and I often need to track it and pay close attention to why it feels off to figure out how to feel like myself again. It's a whole process , ordeal, but it's my life and so it goes. Getting in tune with your body isn't easy. This blog post is definitely ...

Aerial Obsession

Image
Hello Internet! It's been a minute since I've posted on this blog because this teacher is back to school! I missed my students, my co-workers and having a real routine, albeit an extremely busy one! However, we will be backtracking to the middle of August to explain today's post. One of my last fun summer adventures was to visit our friends in Albany. My husband's annual Fantasy football league draft with our wonderful friends from college is always an incredibly fun weekend for both of us. A few months earlier, one of my Albany friends, Twizz, had posted a picture of her in Aerial yoga and said we could do a class together before the draft started. I was SO excited because I had been dying to go back to taking yoga classes this summer, but never got the opportunity. Aerial looked as frightening as it looked amazing, and I was thrilled to try it out. How cool is this?! Twizz and I decided to go to a beginner class, which was probably a good idea for me, on a...

Stressed? Me Too.

Image
For me, being near the ocean is an instant de-stressor. Since I'm still trying out a few new supplements for a future post, I decided to write this week about a pretty common and reoccurring feeling: stress. I feel like a bit of a hypocrite writing a whole post about being stressed since it seems to be my typical response to "How are you?" Full disclosure: Writing to the world about stress actually made me feel a bit stressed. Again, I'm not a licensed health professional of any sort, I'm just writing what I know and what I'm still learning in the hopes that it might help others. I'll honestly probably end up consulting my own post when I'm having a tough day in the future. As a teacher with a very packed schedule, it was intimidating for me to learn how to take time off for myself, especially when I needed it. Even summer vacation can feel like a curse when you have too much free time after having relatively no free time. Plus, Hashimotos dis...

EuroTrip2k17 Gluten Free Food Travel Series: Snacks and Drinks

Image
I couldn't end this EuroTrip2k17 Gluten Free Food Travel Series (I know, the title is unbelievably long, but it's accurate!) without a post discussing another important travel staple: snacks and drinks. Obviously an essential part of any vacation is packing or purchasing munchable goodies, but in Europe, you are surrounded by cultural delicacies that can be intimidating to pick up and enjoy if you have a food allergy. Snacks Various Potato Chips Let's start with my good ol' (usually) gluten free standby: potato chips. Chips have been and will always be my Kryptonite. I don't usually buy them unless I KNOW I'm hanging out with at least one other person because I'll finish a bag solo in one sitting. However, traveling is another story. When you are in a foreign country and can't find ANYTHING on the go that looks safe to eat, why not just grab a bag of chips where the major ingredients are potato, oil and salt? I had to do this a few times on our ...
